October – Visit Monemvasia

As summer fades away, Monemvasia, a medieval fortified town in the southeast part of the Peloponnese, is the ideal destination for those of you who enjoy romantic trips in historic places. Once a Byzantine stronghold, then a Venetian acquisition, it was later occupied by the Ottoman Turks, before it was freed after the Greek War of Independence. This fortified town, built on a big rock, is connected to the Peloponnesian mainland via a bridge. Enjoy a walk along the cobblestone winding narrow streets; pass by stone-built grand medieval houses; climb to Goula – the so-called Upper Castle area – for a breathtaking panoramic view of the town and the surrounding blue sea; and visit Byzantine churches, such as Agia Sophia, perched at the top of the rock.
